Calligraphy

During Her childhood in Japan, Satomi Yoshida-Katz discovered a special interest and talent in Shodo, the art of Japanese calligraphy. Her training began at age four and continues today through a private calligraphy school in Fukuoka, Japan. She has received gold medal awards for traditional Shodo in numerous Japanese calligraphy competitions in Kyushu Island, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Today, her work goes beyond expressing the formal elements of order and form that are an essential part of traditional calligraphy. Satomi enters the world of Sumi, using brush strokes and wash painting techniques to create tones and textures. Satomi’s belief that every space and everything in our lives has meaning is reflected in her art, which is inspired by nature, sounds, and emotions. The organic world is an important component of her work, as evidenced by her choices of tools and mediums. Her papers are handmade Japanese rice papers and recycled papers. Her brushes are horsehair and wool. Organic pigments include natural vegetable dye powders, traditional Sumi inks, and charcoal fashioned from carbonized woods.

Chester NJ Residence

Using this Chester, New Jersey home’s lush garden as the guiding principle, the goal for the sunroom was to create a minimal transition between the in-and-outdoors and the client’s wish for a relaxed, casual aesthetic. Both are achieved without sacrificing sophistication with the use of clean lines and earth-friendly materials.

This four-season patio is awash in natural light and gentle on the environment with ecologically responsible furnishings.  Hand-woven from organic materials, the custom area rug adds texture and warmth to the seating area.  The original teak ceiling and floor have been restored, emphasizing the commitment to quality design with reduced environmental impact.  A breezy finishing touch from the ceiling fan completes the look and feel of this tranquil space.

The Zen-like spirit of the interiors is a reflection of the home’s bucolic setting. Translucent shades, handwoven in Japan, filter the sunlight while softly preserving the outside views. Chinese art and treasured objects collected by the client during travels to Asia inspired a color palette that is restful and serene.

In the dining room, a Chinese Emperor and Empress preside over an antique Chinese console, dining table and chairs. Following the Feng Shui principle that concerns must be filled, the designer created two sculptural arrangements of bamboo poles in oversized ceramic planters that rest on iron bases.

This Colorado residence pays homage to the Italian Villa with a sun-washed color scheme and subtle wall finishes that add depth to the spaces. The region’s bright natural light is artfully controlled with adjustable window treatments and completed by layers of interior lighting that provide both functional and ambient illumination.

The soft leather chair, a treasured memento of the client’s days as a White House cabinet member, was the starting point for a small room off the foyer that serves as both an informal reception area and a welcoming place for family and close friends to gather. Floor-to-ceiling draperies create an elegant backdrop for the baby grand piano. Dramatic lighting showcases an antique wood panel from Africa as a stunning piece of art.  A sophisticated golden almond color was created for the powder room to complement a mature palette. Inspired by the semolina wheat grasses in the field of Tuscany, the bathroom was transformed into a relaxing retreat.
