Designing for the Future

The crossroads of form and function
Satomi Yoshida-Katz, Founder & Principal Interior Designer, YZDA

YZDA recently had the opportunity to design a shared room for two young brothers at Armani Casa Miami. From the beginning, my goal was not simply to create a place to sleep, but a space that could support many different moments in their daily lives. The room needed to hold reading, homework, play, quiet time, and visits from friends, while still feeling calm and ordered. Just as important, it needed to grow with them, shifting from early childhood into the next stages of their lives without losing its sense of harmony with the rest of the residence.

When I design for families, I think of the home as a small community, and in this project the children were as much my clients as their parents. I spent time listening to how they like to play, what helps them focus, and how they imagine sharing a room in the future. Together, we made choices that respected their creativity while guiding them toward a room that supports good habits, with clear zones for learning, intuitive storage, and an environment that encourages independence and shared responsibility. The result is not only a playful space, but also an educational one that quietly teaches organization, collaboration, and care for their surroundings. If you want to read more about the project and our collaboration with Resource Furniture, you can explore their recent feature here.
