Hyogo Japan Residence

Hyogo, JP

Located on the historic grounds of the former Belgian consulate in Hyogo, Japan, this residence reflects a harmonious blend of history, heritage, and modern design. YZDA’s vision was to honor the client’s cherished memories of the original structure while creating a serene and elegant home rooted in their family’s American furniture legacy, with touches of English charm and French sophistication.

A grand stair hall with a striking skylight serves as the centerpiece of the home, flooding the interior with natural light and fostering a sense of openness and connection. In the living room, a striking fireplace anchors the space, complemented by thoughtfully arranged seating areas that encourage both intimate family moments and lively gatherings. The dining room continues the theme of elegance, featuring bespoke furniture and French textiles, creating an inviting space for shared meals and togetherness.

Each bedroom has been transformed into a tranquil retreat, with soft palettes and curated art that evoke calm and promote well-being. The anteroom combines contemporary aesthetics with vintage touches, offering a cozy reading nook filled with books and personal artifacts that celebrate the family’s history.

This project was marked by close international collaboration, with YZDA navigating the challenges of remote design during the pandemic. Through open communication and exceptional craftsmanship, every detail—from custom-designed furniture to the seamless integration of materials—was meticulously executed to bring the family’s vision to life.

Ultimately, this revitalized residence stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design. It merges the past and present, blending personal significance with timeless elegance to create a serene sanctuary where history and modernity coexist beautifully.
