Casino & Resort

Gray Indiana

In Gary, IN, prior to founding YZDA, Satomi led a design team at an international firm on a series of interior architecture projects focused on transforming traditional casinos and casino boats into immersive hospitality experiences. Tasked with elevating the standard gaming environment, the project merged sophistication with excitement, creating spaces that captivated guests from the moment they arrived. Through the thoughtful integration of color, texture, lighting, and layout, the design aimed to stimulate the senses while fostering comfort, engagement, and flow.

At the heart of the design philosophy was the strategic use of psychological principles, applied to encourage exploration, interaction, and repeat visits. Labyrinthine pathways, intuitive spatial organization, and dynamic lighting schemes drew guests deeper into the space, while tactile finishes and layered soundscapes balanced energy and intimacy. Public areas were animated with bold patterns and rich materials, yet softened with acoustic treatments and ambient lighting to maintain a sense of control and ease. Special attention was given to durability, safety, and compliance, including the use of fire-retardant materials, proper ventilation, and Coast Guard-approved ergonomic furnishings on floating venues.

Every detail was considered not only for visual and emotional impact, but also for operational functionality. From multifunctional layouts that maximized scenic views to custom furniture solutions and collaborative coordination with architects and contractors, the project demonstrated a deep understanding of how design enhances guest satisfaction and supports business objectives. This work stands as an early example of Satomi’s ability to design for emotional resonance and operational excellence, delivering memorable, sensory-rich environments that remain at the forefront of hospitality design.
